The disturbing incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning before the sun had risen. Article continues below A spokesperson for OpenAI said: "Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt." It came just hours before California residents were warned to brace for a terrifying sonic boom in the skies at one exact time . The individual is in custody, and we're assisting law enforcement with their investigation," the statement continued. T he SFDP said they were contacted in the early hours of morning "regarding a fire investigation" where Altman owns a $27 million, 9,500-square-foot mansion. They said an unknown man had thrown "an incendiary destructive device at a home, causing a fire to an exterior gate," and the call came in at around 4.12am PT. Interestingly, the police statement did not explicitly mention Altman or OpenAI. However, an individual can be heard saying, “Someone threw a Molotov cocktail slash sticky bomb at the gate of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI’s residence,” in police dispatcher audio. OpenAI staff were informed about the incident in an email, which read: “At approximately 3:45am PT, an unidentified individual approached Sam’s residence and threw an incendiary device toward the property. The device landed nearby and extinguished. There were no injuries and only minimal damage was reported.” Later, at 5.07am PT, SFPD received a call to 1400 block of 3rd Street, close to where OpenAi's headquarters are located, "regarding an unknown male subject threatening to burn down the building." A man aged 20 was taken into custody. “When officers arrived on scene, they recognized the male to be the same suspect from the earlier incident and immediately detained him,” police said about the young man. The case remains an open and active investigation. No charges have been made yet, and the suspect’s identity has not been publicly revealed. During the second Trump administration, Altman has become a key ally for the president. In February, Altman announced that OpenAI would work with the Pentagon to supply AI to classified military networks.
